Former U.S. President Barack Obama has gathered a group of famous musicians to perform at the opening of his new cultural hub. The star-studded lineup includes Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge from U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen. This event, marking the grand unveiling of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side, will be live-streamed on June 18 at noon ET, just a day before it opens to the public on Juneteenth.
In contrast, current U.S. President Donald Trump is unlikely to attend. Trump previously criticized the center, referring to it as “Obama’s badly delayed, and tremendously over-budget, ‘library.'” Trump has been focusing on the Freedom 250 program this summer, commemorating the country’s 250th birthday. This initiative included a White House-hosted Freedom 250 UFC event on Trump’s 80th birthday, where fighter Josh Hokit made negative comments about Michelle Obama.
Critics have accused Trump of using presidential events to promote his political brand. Trump’s decision to term the celebration as a rally has fueled further scrutiny, especially after he sidestepped the bipartisan America 250 committee to lead the parallel Freedom 250 committee.
Some artists have withdrawn from anniversary events associated with Trump, such as the Great American State Fair, prompting speculation about the political ties of these occasions. Despite some cancellations, performers like Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice are still expected to participate.
Trump suggested canceling the original event concept after several artists pulled out, declaring himself the main attraction for a rally on the National Mall on June 24. Meanwhile, America 250 is proceeding with its own festivities, including the America’s Block Party concert on July 4 with acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Queen Latifah, and Chris Stapleton.
The unveiling of Obama’s center follows a federal court order for the removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center. Named after President John F. Kennedy, Trump swiftly replaced the leadership of the institution and added his name to the building.
Experts see a competition for the spotlight between the separate events and centers of Obama and Trump, with Obama’s event showcasing global respect and cultural significance. In contrast, Trump’s events lack the same level of legitimacy, according to observers.
Criticism has also been directed towards Obama’s center for its size and design choices. Some have noted its imposing presence and the absence of a National Archives and Records Administration facility on-site. The center is expected to attract around 1 million visitors annually to its 20-acre campus, featuring amenities like a public library branch, an NBA-grade basketball court, a garden, and a playground.
