“Legacy of Gordo: Baby Rattlesnakes Offer Hope for Endangered Species”

Featured in:

Last summer, an Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake named Gordo met his demise on Matchett Road, but his genetic legacy lives on through his offspring. Local reptile conservation expert Jonathan Choquette revealed that Gordo successfully bred before his death, resulting in seven baby rattlesnakes that are currently being nurtured for future release in the area.

The Eastern Massasauga rattlesnakes face near-extinction in Windsor-Essex, with potentially less than 10 remaining in the region. These snakes are the sole venomous species in Ontario and are critically endangered statewide. While they typically go unnoticed, they will rattle or retreat when threatened, reserving biting as a last resort.

Gordo, a key male specimen aimed at bolstering the population at Ojibway Prairie Complex, was tragically found dead on Matchett Road in September 2025. Despite his upbringing at Toronto Zoo, Gordo’s lineage can be traced back to rescued Eastern Massasauga rattlesnakes in LaSalle over 25 years ago.

Choquette emphasized the significance of preserving the species, stating that active efforts are needed to prevent the local extinction of Massasaugas in Windsor-Essex. He confirmed that Gordo had successfully mated with a female named Ashley before his demise, and recent x-rays at Toronto Zoo revealed that she was carrying eggs, which have since hatched.

These offspring, born from Gordo and Ashley, will be kept in captivity until they reach a year old, with plans for their release in the Ojibway Prairie Complex next summer. Choquette highlighted the importance of this unique tallgrass prairie population of Massasauga rattlesnakes in Canada, underscoring its significance in preserving the country’s natural heritage.
