Los Angeles has officially begun the countdown to its inaugural Paralympic Games, with an initial competition schedule for the 2028 event being revealed. The LA28 organizing committee disclosed that the Games will showcase a record number of sports, sessions, and medal events, totaling 23 sports and 560 medals across 294 sessions. This comprehensive schedule, developed in collaboration with international federations and Olympic Broadcasting Services, aims to prioritize the wellbeing of athletes while maximizing global broadcast opportunities.
Ileana Rodriguez, the LA28 vice president of Paralympic strategy and relations, emphasized the significance of Los Angeles hosting its first Paralympic Games and highlighted the meticulous planning to cater to both athletes and viewers worldwide. Mayor Karen Bass expressed pride in the city’s role as the host, noting the historic participation of female athletes on the global stage.
The 2028 Paralympic Games will kick off on August 15 at SoFi Stadium, culminating on August 27 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The first day of competition will witness the crowning of champions in Para athletics, wheelchair fencing, shooting Para sport, Para equestrian, and Para track cycling. Additionally, Para climbing will make its debut over four days starting from Day 9, while wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball will introduce extended formats with play-in rounds.
