Israeli forces were responsible for the deaths of 11 Palestinians, which included two children and three journalists, in separate incidents in Gaza on Wednesday, according to local medics. The violence marked a setback to the three-month-old ceasefire in the conflict-ridden area.
Palestinian health officials reported that an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of three Palestinian journalists who were on assignment to film a displaced persons camp in central Gaza. Additionally, three individuals, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed by Israeli tank shelling in central Gaza. Two more, including a 13-year-old boy, died in shooting incidents in Khan Younis in the southern part of Gaza, as per medics.
The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed that a total of 11 Palestinians lost their lives as a result of various Israeli attacks throughout the day. Israel’s military stated that the strike on the journalists was in response to identifying suspects operating a drone affiliated with Hamas in central Gaza.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the killings, emphasizing that the journalists were on a humanitarian mission to document the plight of civilians in displacement camps. The journalists were reportedly supported by the Egyptian Committee overseeing relief efforts in Gaza.
Local journalist Emad Abu Shawish, who witnessed the strike, expressed shock at the incident and criticized the ongoing violence in Gaza despite the ceasefire. The vehicle targeted in the airstrike was identified as belonging to the Egyptian committee, according to Mohammed Mansour, the committee’s spokesperson.
Since the start of the conflict in October 2023, over 200 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. While Israel claims to target only combatants and military sites, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reports a higher death toll of over 260 individuals.
The ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. in October has yet to progress beyond the initial phase, with challenges remaining on both sides regarding the next steps. Hamas and Israel continue to blame each other for ceasefire violations, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Residents in Palestinian-controlled areas have witnessed ongoing clashes despite the partial Israeli military withdrawal following the ceasefire. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the terms of the agreement and work towards a lasting peace in the region.
