In a surprising development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry announced the reception of 54 unidentified bodies from Israel and 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians believed to have perished during the two-year conflict with Hamas. Health authorities in Gaza have initiated the process of identifying these remains.
Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special committee for receiving bodies at Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed the acceptance of the unidentified bodies and remains on Wednesday night. Al-Wahidi stated that the hospital had received intact bodies and human remains in closed boxes, which will undergo forensic examination the following day.
Health officials disclosed that they lack information on the circumstances or locations of the individuals’ deaths and have no identifying details regarding them. They clarified that the transfer of remains to Gaza was not part of a truce agreement or an exchange for Israeli hostages’ bodies.
Last week, Israeli authorities released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians, marking the final exchange between Israel and Hamas in the initial phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. This action followed the recovery of the remains of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, who had been held by Hamas for over 840 days since the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
The transfer of 54 bodies from Israel to Gaza increases the total number of deceased individuals released by Israel to 414 since the commencement of the ceasefire deal on October 10, 2024. The return of the Palestinian victims’ bodies was a key provision outlined in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement signed last October.
Amani Al-Naouq, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed the ICRC’s facilitation of the transfer on Wednesday. Despite resource constraints, forensic authorities are commencing the challenging task of identifying these remains to provide clarity to thousands of families with missing loved ones in Gaza.
The handover of bodies occurred amidst another tragic episode in Gaza, with Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes claiming the lives of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a paramedic. The violence, which resulted in casualties, represents a recent incident undermining the ceasefire in the region, triggered by militants firing at Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas. An Israeli soldier sustained severe injuries in the attack, deemed a violation of the ceasefire agreement by the Israeli military.
