“Gaza Aid Stuck in Neighboring Countries; Urgent Shelter Needs Unmet”

Featured in:

Thousands of aid packages in Jordan, Egypt, and Israel, intended for Gaza, are stuck, hindering relief efforts despite a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. With the onset of colder weather, many Gazans are still living in dilapidated tents, lacking proper shelter after Israel’s destructive offensive. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) emphasizes the urgent need for shelter materials in Gaza, as only a fraction of the required aid has been allowed in by Israeli authorities since the ceasefire.

The NRC, leading a coalition of agencies addressing Gaza’s shelter crisis, reports that numerous requests for essential supplies like tents, bedding, and kitchen sets have been denied. The delay in delivering aid puts lives at risk, especially as winter approaches. Millions of vital items are stalled in neighboring countries, leaving around 1.5 million people in Gaza vulnerable to deteriorating conditions.

Despite commitments to allow hundreds of aid trucks daily into Gaza, the flow of supplies remains inadequate. The World Food Program (WFP) notes that only half the necessary food is reaching Gaza, while Palestinian agencies report even lower percentages. Israeli authorities claim they are meeting their obligations under the ceasefire agreement and blame Hamas for any food shortages.

Recent improvements have been observed in Gaza since mid-October, with OCHA reporting reduced malnutrition rates among children. While access to food has slightly improved, disparities between regions persist, with the north experiencing harsher conditions. The urgency of the situation is highlighted by the need for faster aid distribution as winter approaches.

The lack of diverse food options, including meat and vegetables, exacerbates the nutrition crisis in Gaza. Ongoing fuel shortages further complicate cooking and food preparation, with a majority resorting to burning waste, posing additional health risks. The conflict, which began in 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction, further complicating humanitarian efforts in the region.

Health officials continue to manage exchanges of bodies between Israel and Gaza, a part of the ceasefire agreement. The return of remains and hostages remains a contentious issue, adding to the complexities of maintaining peace in the region. Gaza continues to face immense challenges in accessing essential aid and resources to alleviate humanitarian suffering.
