It was a bustling Wednesday afternoon at Potluck Flavours, our restaurant in Falmouth, Jamaica, when my life was shattered by a phone call. The news that my brother Dan had been brutally murdered while at work left me frozen in disbelief. Dan, my pillar of support and closest confidant since childhood, fell victim to a senseless act of violence when five men, seeking employment on his construction project, fatally stabbed him outside the premises.
The tragic incident, overshadowed by the high crime rate in Jamaica, highlighted the grim reality of living in a community plagued by unsolved murders and violence. The fear and uncertainty following Dan’s death prompted me to seek a safer environment for my family. With multiple agencies offering pathways to Canada, I seized the opportunity to secure a job in St. John’s as a trained chef, meeting the educational requirements for immigration.
Leaving behind my husband and young children, I embarked on a journey to Canada in 2013, hoping for a better future. However, the initial years were fraught with challenges and loneliness, compounded by cultural differences and a lack of support. Struggling to find stable accommodation and facing discrimination in the workplace, I grappled with grief and isolation in a foreign land.
Despite the hardships, I persevered, channeling my pain into culinary creativity and cultural fusion. Blending Jamaican flavors with Newfoundland traditions, I found solace in the kitchen, creating dishes that bridged the gap between my homeland and adopted country. Through resilience and determination, I carved a niche for myself as an executive chef, actor, writer, and entrepreneur, advocating for inclusivity and compassion in the culinary industry.
My journey, marked by loss and resilience, inspired me to empower immigrant women navigating similar challenges. By sharing my experiences and insights, I aim to guide newcomers in overcoming barriers and finding their place in a new society. As I continue to evolve as a leader and advocate, my mission remains rooted in building a community where diversity is celebrated, and individuals are valued for their contributions.
While the emotional toll of my immigration journey has been profound, witnessing my children thrive in a safe and hopeful environment reaffirms the sacrifices made along the way. Through my art, storytelling, and commitment to empowering others, I strive to impart a message of resilience and transformation, proving that amidst adversity, one can rebuild and thrive.
