France Criticizes U.S. Boat Strikes in Caribbean

Featured in:

France’s foreign affairs minister has strongly criticized the United States for its deadly boat strikes in the Caribbean, labeling them as violations of international law. Jean-Noël Barrot made these remarks at the G7 summit of foreign ministers in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., expressing concern over the U.S. military’s 19 strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coasts of Latin America, resulting in the deaths of 76 individuals. The U.S. has justified these actions by accusing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking activities and approving covert CIA operations in Venezuela. Barrot emphasized France’s unease over the military operations in the Caribbean region due to its presence in the area through its overseas territories, where a significant number of French citizens reside.

Barrot’s comments coincided with a CNN report alleging that Britain had halted intelligence sharing with the U.S. from its Caribbean assets out of concerns related to the deadly boat strikes. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any raised objections during the G7 meetings and dismissed reports of Britain suspending intelligence sharing as false, emphasizing the strong partnership between the U.S. and the UK. Meanwhile, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand clarified that Canada is not involved in the U.S. strikes on Venezuelan vessels and asserted that the U.S. authorities are responsible for ensuring compliance with international law.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered a cessation of intelligence sharing with the U.S. until the boat strikes cease, emphasizing the need to prioritize human rights in the fight against drugs. The Washington Post criticized the U.S. for potentially alienating allies through its actions, highlighting the international concerns surrounding the legality and consequences of the boat strikes.

In response to questions about Canada’s role, Anand reiterated that Canada is not participating in the U.S. military actions in the Caribbean and continues to monitor the situation closely. The U.S. administration justifies its actions under the War Powers Act, citing the need to combat drug-related deaths in the U.S. and targeting suspected drug carriers as enemy combatants.

While the U.S. faces criticism from various quarters for its lethal actions, concerns over due process and adherence to international law persist. The lack of bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate for measures to address the strikes reflects the ongoing debate within the country. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the boat strikes, questioning the abandonment of due process and legal norms in the military operations.

The escalating tensions in the region, with the U.S. deploying additional military assets, have raised concerns over the potential consequences of further confrontations. Venezuela, despite its military drills, faces challenges in equipment and capabilities compared to the U.S., potentially leading to a significant power imbalance in any military engagement.
