EU Lawmaker Urges Strong Response to Trump’s Greenland Threat

Featured in:

European lawmaker Karin Karlsbro emphasizes actions over words when dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump is in a standoff with European leaders over his threats to take control of Greenland by force, a move opposed by the people of Greenland and Denmark. In response to opposition from EU countries, Trump announced a 10% tariff on eight nations, leading the EU to consider retaliatory tariffs or the use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), also known as the “trade bazooka.” Karlsbro advocates for a strong response, stating that it is time to use deterrent measures like the ACI to counter U.S. coercion. The EU members are divided on employing the “bazooka,” but Karlsbro believes it is necessary to send a clear message to Trump. This instrument would allow the EU to react collectively to economic threats, similar to NATO’s Article 5 principle of collective defense. Despite some EU leaders showing reluctance, Karlsbro remains confident in the strong support for Denmark and Greenland within the EU and globally. She stresses the importance of demonstrating the EU’s capability and readiness to act decisively, targeting sensitive U.S. sectors with potential tariffs. Karlsbro warns that passivity could lead to further escalation and emphasizes the need for a unified response from the EU to preserve the global order and prevent changes through coercion or violence.
