The Department of Fisheries and Oceans researchers are examining potential scenarios that may arise if there are changes in lobster stocks in the waters off Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick. This includes evaluating the impact of adjustments such as reducing season lengths and trap limits, modifying size restrictions, and implementing other strategies.
Adam Cook, a DFO scientist and co-lead author of a recent report, emphasized the importance of updating existing lobster management measures due to evolving environmental conditions, particularly changes in water temperatures. Despite these considerations, Cook mentioned that Canadian lobster fisheries are currently deemed healthy, with stock status indicators generally surpassing long-term averages.
The study, which focused on lobster fishing areas 27 to 38 extending from northern Cape Breton to the Bay of Fundy along the Atlantic coast, utilized modeling and simulations to assess the effects of various management interventions. It highlighted that shortening the fishing season proves to be an effective method to lessen exploitation, injuries, and incidental deaths within the lobster population.
Furthermore, the research suggested that minor reductions in trap limits may not significantly impact lobster exploitation unless substantial changes are made, which could also lead to notable economic and operational consequences. Long-term measures like v-notching, a practice where egg-bearing female lobsters are marked for protection, were also discussed as strategies to safeguard the species.
Bernie Berry, a senior fisheries adviser at the Coldwater Lobster Association in Yarmouth, N.S., emphasized the importance of utilizing DFO-generated data to make informed decisions and adapt to potential alterations in water conditions and fishery management practices. He underscored the value of accumulating knowledge over time to evaluate the effects of different harvest-control regulations on fisheries.
