The unique characteristics of Alberta whisky have long been a topic of discussion. What exactly sets it apart from renowned bourbons like those from Kentucky or Tennessee remains a mystery. However, the provincial government is taking steps to define the criteria for labeling a product as Alberta whisky. Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally have been given the task.
When asked about their interpretation of this definition, different distillers offer varying perspectives. David Farran, the president and CEO of Eau Claire Distillery in Diamond Valley, south of Calgary, reflects on the evolution of the local market. With over a decade of experience, Farran believes that Alberta possesses all the necessary elements to produce exceptional whisky, such as its esteemed barley and suitable climate. He anticipates that upcoming regulations could elevate the recognition of Alberta whisky.
Farran notes that Alberta whisky has not traditionally received global acclaim and has often been undervalued. He hopes that changes in the industry will enhance its reputation and value over time.
