Clintons to Testify in Epstein Inquiry

Featured in:

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, are set to provide testimony in a congressional inquiry related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as confirmed by a congressional aide on Monday. The House’s oversight committee, led by Republicans, recently put forward a recommendation to hold the Clintons in contempt for their refusal to testify regarding their association with Epstein, a suggestion supported by several Democrats on the committee. Although the Clintons expressed willingness to cooperate with the committee, they declined to appear in person, citing their belief that the investigation was politically motivated to shield Republican President Donald Trump.

The House of Representatives had intended to vote on holding the two prominent Democrats in contempt later this week, a decision that could potentially result in criminal charges. Notably, in 2024, Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro, who served in Trump’s initial administration, were briefly imprisoned for defying a House committee’s subpoena concerning Trump’s actions leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

In response to inquiries about the status of the contempt votes against the Clintons, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson informed Reuters that the matter was currently under review by legal counsel. Johnson had previously expressed satisfaction upon learning that the former president and former secretary of state had agreed to testify.

The recent release of numerous internal documents by the U.S. Justice Department pertaining to Epstein has unveiled the late financier’s connections to various distinguished individuals in politics, finance, academia, and business before and after his 2008 guilty plea to prostitution charges.

It would be unprecedented in contemporary times for a former president to provide testimony in Congress within such a highly charged context. Since World War II, only Harry Truman and Gerald Ford have testified before Congress, with Truman discussing the United Nations Charter and Ford addressing the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.

Republicans are seeking a “political spectacle,” as indicated by a top Democrat, with Bill Clinton known to have traveled on Epstein’s plane on multiple occasions, though he has expressed remorse over the relationship and claimed ignorance of Epstein’s criminal activities. Representatives of Clinton stated that he severed ties with Epstein following the initial criminal charges in 2006. Additionally, Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate now incarcerated, attended Clinton’s daughter Chelsea’s wedding in 2010.

Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and presidential candidate, stated through a spokesperson that she does not recall ever conversing with Epstein. Republican James Comer of Kentucky, the oversight committee chair, remarked that the Clintons have not specified a date for their depositions, and he intends to discuss the next steps with committee members.

Comer rejected an offer from the Clintons’ attorneys for Bill Clinton to undergo a transcribed interview and for Hillary Clinton to provide a sworn declaration. Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Comer’s actions, suggesting they were motivated by partisanship and aimed at embarrassing the Clintons rather than seeking information. Democrats also highlighted that the Justice Department has not fully disclosed all pertinent materials on Epstein and that the Republican leadership has not pursued this issue.
