“Chemists Unlock Plant’s Drug-Making Secrets”

A team of chemists from the University of New Brunswick has conducted groundbreaking research that could transform the manufacturing process of certain drugs. Collaborating with researchers from Zhejiang and Westlake universities in China, the UNB team uncovered the mechanism through which certain plants produce cancer-fighting drugs.

The lead researcher, Yang Qu, an associate professor of chemistry at UNB, highlighted the potential to significantly enhance the speed of drug production in lab settings now that the plant’s manufacturing process has been decoded. Qu stated that their findings have boosted production efficiency to nearly 1,000 times higher than previously recorded levels.

The study, recently featured in the prestigious academic journal Science, focused on vinblastine, a challenging-to-produce drug utilized in treating various cancers like bladder, brain, and testicular cancer. Despite its effectiveness, vinblastine is only naturally synthesized by the Madagascar periwinkle plant, which yields minimal quantities of the drug.

Qu emphasized the inefficiency of the plant’s production process, noting that an extensive amount of plant material is required to extract a small quantity of vinblastine. The complexity of the drug further complicates chemical synthesis efforts, making production both challenging and costly.

The researchers uncovered that unlike traditional enzyme-driven pathways in plants, the Madagascar periwinkle employs a “scaffold protein” to facilitate the drug synthesis process. Qu drew an analogy to construction scaffolds, explaining how the scaffold protein organizes the components for efficient and rapid drug production.

By integrating the scaffold protein into the plant’s microbial system, researchers anticipate enhancing the drug production process significantly. While the new findings have not yet translated into immediate production advancements, Qu expressed optimism that industrial-scale production of vinblastine is now within closer reach than ever before.

Looking ahead, Qu foresees practical applications emerging from the research in the foreseeable future, potentially ushering in a new era of drug production efficiency.
