Hamilton-native Broadway actress Caissie Levy won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical for her role as Mother in the revival of “Ragtime.” During her acceptance speech at Radio City Music Hall, she expressed gratitude to her Canadian roots and her parents for their support and guidance. Levy acknowledged the importance of teamwork and credited her parents for teaching her valuable life lessons.

Several Canadians achieved success at the 79th annual Tony Awards. Joshua Henry, born in Winnipeg, secured his first Tony Award for best leading actor in a musical for his portrayal of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in “Ragtime.” Lorne Michaels, the creator of “Saturday Night Live,” won his first Tony as a producer for “Schmigadoon!” — an adaptation of the Apple TV series that was recognized as the best new musical.

The best new play award was presented to Bess Wohl’s “Liberation,” which delves into the experiences of a women’s group in 1970s Ohio, addressing themes of feminism, racism, and gender norms. Wohl, only the fourth woman to win the best play Tony, emphasized the importance of women using their voices and encouraged girls to speak their truth.

“Death of a Salesman,” Arthur Miller’s renowned play exploring the American Dream, received the best play revival award and garnered six Tonys, including Laurie Metcalf’s win for her role as Linda Loman and Joe Mantello’s recognition as best director.

John Lithgow claimed his third Tony for best lead actor in a play for his performance in “Giant,” becoming the oldest man to win a competitive acting Tony at 80 years old. Shoshana Bean, awarded best featured actress in a musical for her role in “The Lost Boys,” highlighted the strength and resilience of single mothers in her acceptance speech.

The musical “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” which reimagines the classic musical with a focus on queer ballroom culture, received recognition for best direction of a musical. The event concluded with Pink hosting the gala, delivering an energetic and entertaining performance throughout the evening.
