A beluga whale, part of the relocation effort from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont., has passed away in València, Spain. Jelly Bean, who arrived at the Oceanogràfic de València less than a month ago, died suddenly on Friday. She and another beluga named Cleopatra, along with four dolphins, were moved to the Spanish aquarium as part of international rescue operations.
Despite initial feeding challenges, Jelly Bean had shown signs of improvement under close monitoring by the veterinary team. However, her sudden death prompted the need for a necropsy to determine the cause.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s passing and highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure the whales’ safe relocation, including health assessments and permits. The minister praised the receiving facilities for their dedication to the belugas’ well-being.
Unfortunately, two other belugas from Marineland, Peekachu and Rain, also died shortly after being relocated to different facilities. Beethoven, a resident beluga at Shedd Aquarium, also passed away following the arrival of the Marineland whales.
Animal Justice raised concerns about the stress of transporting the belugas and emphasized the need for proactive planning to safeguard their health during relocations. Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose echoed these concerns, warning about the potential risks and stress associated with moving the belugas.
The unexpected loss of Jelly Bean has deeply affected the team caring for her at Oceanogràfic de València. The rescue mission, despite its challenges, aimed to provide essential care for the belugas, acknowledging each animal’s unique needs and history.
