The creators of the independent film “As Deep as the Grave” unveiled a sneak peek of the AI-generated version of Val Kilmer, a deceased actor, during CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The film features Kilmer’s character, Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Indigenous spiritualist, who delivers a line in the trailer: “Don’t fear the dead and don’t fear me.”
Val Kilmer passed away at the age of 65, and the decision to use generative AI to bring him back for the historical drama sparked controversy. Writer-director Coerte Voorhees and his brother John addressed the ethical considerations of using AI to recreate a deceased actor’s performance. They emphasized their collaboration with Kilmer’s family and the actors’ union to ensure ethical handling of the situation.
Producer John Voorhees acknowledged the risks associated with using AI actors based on real individuals but highlighted the adherence to guidelines set by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) union. The union and studios had previously reached an agreement on the terms of using AI performers following the industry strike in 2023.
Apart from AI actors, the industry has seen advancements in digital alterations, including digital replicas of real people and employment-based digital enhancements for actors. The utilization of AI technology in filmmaking has drawn both criticism and interest from industry professionals and actors like Natasha Lyonne.
The debate around AI in entertainment extends to the Oscars and the disclosure of AI assistance in award-winning performances. The use of AI to enhance performances has become more prevalent, with stars like Val Kilmer embracing the technology to preserve their legacy in the industry.
While AI continues to influence the filmmaking landscape, concerns persist about the impact on traditional acting and the future of the industry. Filmmakers like Timur Bekmambetov are leading the charge in integrating AI tools into Hollywood productions, raising questions about the evolving role of AI in the creative process.
