“Bats’ Origin Revealed: Study Unveils Ancient Traits”

Featured in:

Researchers have resolved the debate on the origin of bats and shed light on the characteristics of early bats by conducting an extensive study involving the analysis of genomes from all 21 modern bat families and comparing them with numerous fossil bats.

According to a new study published in the journal Nature, the earliest bats likely emerged in Europe approximately 65 million years ago. Prior to this study, there was speculation among scientists about the potential origins of bats in Asia, Africa, or North America, but the scarcity of fossil evidence made it challenging to confirm. Sonja Vernes, the senior author of the study and director of the Bat1K consortium, emphasized the global dispersal of bats over millions of years due to their flying capabilities.

Through the sequencing of genomes from 103 bat species and the examination of their traits and genes alongside 44 bat fossils, researchers gained insights into the characteristics of ancient bats. The analysis revealed that ancient bats possessed 26 chromosomes and evolved around 65 million years ago, following the extinction of dinosaurs. Additionally, the study indicated that echolocation developed early in bat evolution, with the fossil bat Vielasia, dating back 50 million years, representing one of the oldest branches in the bat family tree.

Today, there are around 1,500 bat species worldwide, comprising approximately a fifth of all mammal species. The study’s comprehensive family tree illustrates the relationships among the 21 bat families.

The public availability of the data has sparked excitement among researchers like Sonja Vernes, who anticipates potential insights into human health from studying bat genomes. Researchers have long been intrigued by the extended lifespan of bats, their resilience to viral diseases, and the possibility of discovering health applications inspired by bats.

In addition to their longevity and disease resistance, scientists are fascinated by the unique vocal learning abilities of bat pups, which resemble human learning processes. The study not only highlights the remarkable features of bats but also underscores the crucial role they play in various ecosystems, from pollination to insect control.

By collaborating with a global network of 600 researchers, the study involved contributions from experts worldwide, including Canadians like Burton Lim from the Royal Ontario Museum. Lim’s collection of bat samples, predominantly from tropical regions, was instrumental in the genomic analysis, emphasizing the importance of preserving genetic information for future research.

The study’s findings have drawn praise from ecologists like Christina Davy, who sees potential in using genetic insights to guide bat conservation efforts and address challenges such as white-nose syndrome. The availability of extensive bat genome data is expected to catalyze further research into the unique adaptations and evolutionary history of bats, similar to previous genome projects for other species.

As the scientific community delves deeper into the genetic intricacies of bats, the study’s vast database is poised to unlock key mysteries surrounding bat evolution and pave the way for transformative discoveries in the field.
