A year following the passing of the actor, a simulated AI representation of Val Kilmer is set to appear in an indie film, marking a bold move in the utilization of artificial intelligence within the film industry.
First Line Films declared on Wednesday that Kilmer will posthumously star in a movie named “As Deep as the Grave.” The filmmakers revealed that Kilmer had initially agreed to act in the film before his demise, but his health prevented him from doing so.
Kilmer’s estate granted approval for the digital recreation, and they are being compensated accordingly. Mercedes Kilmer, the actor’s daughter, expressed that the role held significance for her father.
In a statement, she mentioned, “He always viewed emerging technologies with hope as a means to broaden storytelling possibilities. This essence is something we are all respecting in this specific film, in which he played a vital role.”
Val Kilmer died in April last year at 65 due to pneumonia. In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent two tracheotomies.
After losing his natural voice, Kilmer sought assistance from an AI software company to replicate his voice digitally. In his last on-screen appearance in 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kilmer’s voice underwent digital modification.
AI’s infiltration into acting has been a contentious issue in Hollywood recently. Some have made efforts to incorporate more AI-generated performances.
Xicoia introduced the AI-generated persona “Tilly Norwood” last year. Recently, the company unveiled a music video.
SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, criticized Xicoia’s “AI actor” but has regulations governing other uses of the technology. According to their guidelines, consent is required from performers for the use of digital replicas. If consent was not acquired before death, it must be obtained from a designated representative or the union.
SAG-AFTRA representatives did not respond to inquiries promptly on Wednesday.
Writer-director Coerte Voorhees and producer John Voorhees affirmed that they adhered to SAG guidelines via email.
The film “As Deep as the Grave,” previously known as “Canyon of the Dead,” was filmed several years ago but faced delays in post-production. It is inspired by the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who uncovered Indigenous history in Arizona.
The AI version of Val Kilmer portrays Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Indigenous spiritual figure. The cast includes Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin.
Coerte Voorhees revealed that Kilmer, who asserted Cherokee lineage, was attracted to the project five years ago. Producers are currently seeking distribution opportunities with the aim of releasing the film this year.
