A man has been found guilty by a jury for the murder of Misha Pavelick at a Miller High School graduation party at Kinookimaw campground almost twenty years ago. Pavelick, aged 19, was fatally stabbed at the campground near Regina Beach in 2006, with the accused facing a second-degree murder charge in 2023.

Family members reacted emotionally as the jury announced the guilty verdict in a Regina King’s Bench courtroom after deliberating for three days. The jury convicted the 36-year-old of second-degree murder, although they had the option to consider manslaughter as well. Due to being 17 at the time of the incident, the accused’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and he remains in custody awaiting sentencing on November 20.

Lorne Pavelick, Misha’s father, along with his wife Karen Monder, expressed relief and gratitude for the trial’s outcome. Lorne Pavelick acknowledged the efforts of Crown prosecutor Adam Breker, the jurors, and the RCMP for their dedication to investigating the case. He also thanked his son’s friends who were present at the campground on the night of the tragedy.

The family emphasized that they want Misha to be remembered beyond the circumstances of his death, highlighting his infectious smile and popularity among friends. Lorne Pavelick deferred to the judge for the sentencing outcome, emphasizing the need for compassion for both families involved in the ordeal.

Following the reading of the verdict, the accused appeared solemn, seated with his family by his side, while his defense lawyer, Andrew Hitchcock, stood nearby. Justice Catherine Dawson discharged the jurors, many of whom were visibly moved. During closing arguments, Hitchcock raised concerns about the impact of rumors and witness testimonies on his client’s case, urging the jury to consider all possible scenarios surrounding Pavelick’s death.

Neither the Crown nor defense lawyers provided comments to the media following the verdict. The Crown is expected to pursue an adult sentence in the case.
