A recent study suggests that taking time to engage in enjoyable activities during daily life can have positive effects. Researchers from Dalhousie University, Brock University, and the University of Waterloo conducted interviews in Halifax about people’s experiences with everyday leisure moments.
These moments, which can be simple and spontaneous, were found to provide stress relief and a more optimistic perspective. Participants mentioned activities like watching the sunrise, playing with a Rubik’s cube, or chatting with a coworker, emphasizing the value of even brief leisure breaks.
Lead author Karen Gallant highlighted that these moments are different from structured leisure activities and can occur anywhere, offering benefits like joy, connection, or sensory pleasure. While some may view them as a compromise in today’s fast-paced world, participants saw them as meaningful opportunities to reclaim personal time.
Psychologist Dr. Rebecca Boehm emphasized the importance of slowing down and focusing on sensory inputs to reduce cognitive overload. Gallant suggested that creating more leisure moments can involve small changes like setting aside extra time or exploring different routes during daily routines.
Although technology like cellphones can sometimes detract from these experiences, they can also be used to capture and share moments of leisure. Being open to spontaneity and preparedness can enhance the likelihood of encountering these meaningful moments in everyday life.
