“China Dominates Winter Paralympics, Russia Returns”

Featured in:

The Milano-Cortina Winter Paralympics concluded with a closing ceremony that Ukraine boycotted, following the United States Para ice hockey team’s gold medal win. China emerged as the dominant force, leading the medal table with 15 golds, surpassing the United States by two. These Games celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics.

The return of the Russian flag and anthem marked a significant moment at Milano-Cortina, with Russian athletes competing under their national flag for the first time since the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. Ukraine’s boycott of the ceremonies was in protest against the presence of Russian athletes, leading to accusations of discrimination by the International Paralympic Committee.

The Russian anthem was heard eight times at the Games, signifying a potential return to the Olympic scene ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. China maintained its dominance, topping the medals table, with Russia in third place. The event saw numerous standout performances, including Canadian Para nordic skiing star Natalie Wilkie’s impressive medal haul. Canada’s wheelchair curling team also made history by securing their fourth Paralympic title.

Milano Cortina set new records as the largest Winter Paralympics to date, hosting 611 Para athletes from 55 nations. Female participation reached a record high, with 160 female athletes competing. The event was widely broadcast globally, highlighting the growing popularity of Para sports. The next Winter Paralympic Games are set to take place in the French Alps in 2030, with discussions underway to expand the sports program and include more disability groups.
