Featured in:

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is set to kick off its third season with the introduction of two new teams, the Vancouver Goldeneyes and Seattle Torrent, formed through an expansion draft. The impact of the expansion rules on these teams’ immediate success remains to be seen. Each team will play 30 regular-season games, with a break during the Olympics. The season opener features the Toronto Sceptres against the Minnesota Frost and the Goldeneyes hosting the Torrent.

CBC will broadcast 17 games this season, including Saturday matchups. The first CBC game will air on November 29, with the Toronto Sceptres facing the Boston Fleet. As the new season begins, let’s assess how the eight PWHL teams stack up. Noteworthy player movements during the off-season have reshaped existing teams significantly.

1. Montreal Victoire
Montreal Victoire managed the expansion draft challenges well, enhancing their roster depth with strategic signings. General Manager Danièle Sauvageau made key acquisitions to strengthen their defense and center depth, complementing star player Marie-Philip Poulin.

2. Vancouver Goldeneyes
GM Cara Gardner Morey focused on building a solid team from the goaltender outward. Vancouver boasts a strong defensive lineup and a versatile forward group, setting high expectations for their inaugural season.

3. Seattle Torrent
Youthful talent combined with experienced players defines the Torrent’s strategy for the season. GM Meghan Turner aims for a fast and physical team with a robust defense and reliable goaltending.

4. Toronto Sceptres
Toronto faced significant losses in the expansion draft but retained key players like Daryl Watts. The team made strategic additions to bolster their defense and forward lines, aiming to maintain competitiveness.

5. Minnesota Frost
Despite losing essential players to expansion, the Frost have a history of playoff success. Led by Taylor Heise, they aim for a strong performance this season with a focus on their goaltending duo.

6. Boston Fleet
The Fleet reinforced their roster with key signings, notably defender Haley Winn. With a reliable goaltender in Aerin Frankel, Boston aims to address their offensive challenges and improve their scoring capabilities.

7. New York Sirens
The Sirens underwent significant changes in the off-season, building a team around star player Sarah Fillier. With a mix of seasoned and rookie talents, New York aims to refine their playing style and lineup.

8. Ottawa Charge
The Charge, a finalist in the previous season, faces the challenge of replacing departed top scorers. Despite notable additions like Anna Shokhina and Rory Guilday, Ottawa may need to adjust its strategies to maintain their competitive edge.

The PWHL’s third season promises exciting matchups and the emergence of new contenders, setting the stage for intense competition and thrilling hockey action.
