An eight-year-old girl tragically passed away on Tuesday in Vancouver’s Yaletown area after falling from a high-rise balcony. The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) responded to the incident near Nelson Street and Expo Boulevard at approximately 2:30 p.m. PT on November 11.
Despite efforts by first responders, the child was declared deceased at the scene, as stated in a VPD press release. The VPD’s Major Crime Section is currently investigating the incident, urging anyone with information to contact the authorities.
Const. Tania Visintin of the VPD mentioned that all sudden deaths are probed to determine potential criminal involvement. In this case, due to the seriousness of the situation and the number of witnesses, Major Crime detectives are handling the investigation.
Initial reports indicated that the child fell from the 23rd floor to a balcony on the seventh floor, leading to a heartbreaking situation for the police, emergency responders, and the family involved. The girl was a student at a school in Squamish, British Columbia, as confirmed by CBC News.
The Sea to Sky School District No. 48 is offering additional support to the community, including counseling services. Superintendent of Schools Chris Nicholson expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the student and extended condolences to the family, friends, and the school community.
