“Sudbury Group Shifting Perception of Bats with ‘Bat Walk’ Study”

Featured in:

A local environmental group in Sudbury is aiming to shift public perception of bats from fear to intrigue as they conduct a study on the city’s bat population. The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee recently organized a “bat walk” at Park Lawn Cemetery where participants utilized iPads equipped with echometers to detect the high-frequency sounds bats emit through echolocation.

Evan Voutier, an ecological technician with the committee, expressed the growing interest in bats in Sudbury and highlighted the lack of research on local bat species. The committee’s research focuses on observing how bats utilize various habitats across Greater Sudbury, including abandoned mines that serve as winter hibernation spots for some species.

Volunteer biologist Franco Mariotti emphasized the importance of studying local bats due to ongoing threats they face, such as white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease causing significant declines in bat populations. Additionally, Mariotti pointed out the risks posed by wind turbines to bat populations, as the rapid air pressure changes near turbine blades can lead to fatal internal injuries.

Despite challenges, the group’s research has revealed the presence of all eight bat species found in Ontario within the Sudbury area. Mariotti underscored the crucial role bats play as natural insect predators, aiding in pest control for agricultural and forest ecosystems.

The committee plans to continue engaging the public through educational “bat walks” to foster a deeper appreciation for bats and raise awareness about their ecological significance. Another public bat walk is scheduled for August 19.
