Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum faced a subdued and politically charged response following a reported sexual assault incident on Tuesday, shedding light on the prevalent issue of gender violence in the country. Sheinbaum disclosed on Thursday that she had filed a criminal complaint against the perpetrator, Uriel Rivera Martinez, who was captured on a widely circulated video groping and attempting to kiss her while she was en route from the National Palace to the Ministry of Education.
In Canada, such an incident would likely be treated as a case of sexual assault due to the unwelcome sexual advances involved. Despite gaining international attention, the incident was downplayed in domestic coverage, primarily focusing on perceived security lapses after the recent high-profile assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Michoacán.
Amneris Chaparro Martínez, a director and researcher at the Centre for Research and Gender Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, highlighted how the normalization of gender violence in the country led to the trivialization of such incidents. During a press conference, Sheinbaum and Minerva Citlalli Hernández Mora, the Secretary for Women, announced plans to enhance the response to sexual violence against women in Mexico, with initiatives set to begin on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Chaparro Martínez emphasized that the incident underscored the vulnerability of women to harassment in public spaces, noting that excuses like intoxication should not justify such behavior. Estefania Vela Barba, the executive director of Intersecta, a feminist human rights organization in Mexico City, criticized how the incident was politicized and distorted, with social media commentary even suggesting it was a staged event to divert attention from the political turmoil following Manzo’s assassination.
Vela Barba commended Sheinbaum for promptly addressing the incident and seeking accountability through legal channels, viewing the president’s response as a step towards raising awareness about the issue of gender violence. She hailed Sheinbaum’s action as a beacon of hope in the fight against gender violence.
