“We Stand on Guard Once More” charity concert unites Newfoundlanders against wildfires

A fundraising concert to support victims of the recent wildfires is set to be held tonight in St. John’s and will be broadcast throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Chris Andrews, one of the event organizers for the We Stand on Guard Once More concert, will be performing with his band, Shanneyganock. Andrews expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to assist the province during this challenging time, highlighting the unique gathering of traditional Newfoundland acts in one show.

The concert, which is already sold out at the Jag Soundhouse in St. John’s, aims to raise significant funds not only from the live audience but also from viewers tuning in from home through various local media channels. Andrews encouraged people to come together, whether at home, in cabins, sheds, or kitchens, to watch and show support for their fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The charitable event has a history of successfully raising funds for communities affected by natural disasters, such as Hurricane Igor in 2010 and post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022. The previous concert raised $2.2 million for post-tropical storm Fiona relief in Newfoundland’s southwest coast, with federal government matching funds, though no similar commitment has been made for this event.

All proceeds from the concert will be directed to the Canadian Red Cross N.L. Wildfire Response Fund. The lineup for the event, hosted by Damhnait Doyle from CBC and Toni Marie Wiseman from NTV, features renowned acts including Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, The Fables, The Ennis Sisters, and more.

The concert will be aired on various platforms on Monday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. NT / 7 p.m. AT, including CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, and CBC N.L. YouTube page, as well as NTV, VOCM, Big Land FM, New Country Radio, OZFM, and Coast 101.1. Viewers can also download the free CBC News app for push alerts and subscribe to the daily headlines newsletter for updates on CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.
