Gene Shalit, a well-known movie critic recognized for his witty puns, passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by a statement from his family relayed to NBC News. Shalit, distinguished by his trademark bow ties and voluminous hair and mustache, was a prominent figure on NBC’s Today show for many years.

Beginning his tenure on Today in 1970 and later assuming the role of arts editor in 1973, Shalit engaged in interviews with celebrities, critiqued books, and evaluated films. Over time, his involvement on the show diminished, leading to his retirement at the age of 84 in 2010, expressing that he had had his fill of the entertainment industry.

Known for his jovial demeanor, Shalit’s “Critic’s Corner” segments on Today were lively and entertaining. His reviews were characterized by playful wordplay and puns, often cleverly linking to the titles of the films he critiqued.

Throughout his career, Shalit maintained a humorous approach to his work, evident in his reviews and writings for publications such as Look magazine and Ladies’ Home Journal. He was also responsible for compiling several humor anthologies, showcasing his love for comedic content.

Despite facing controversy in his critique of the film Brokeback Mountain in 2005, Shalit’s impact on the entertainment industry and his unique reviewing style left a lasting impression. He and his late wife Nancy raised six children together, and his legacy as a charismatic and humorous critic continues to be remembered.
