A study led by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver has explored the use of pigeons to enhance drone technology. The research involved fitting homing pigeons with small backpacks containing a miniature computer and head-mounted cameras to observe their eye movements during flight. The study, published in Current Biology, found that the pigeons made subtle eye movements to potentially gain a clearer view of their surroundings.
The research team, led by Anthony Lapsansky, a former falconer and postdoctoral fellow at UBC, worked with a group of about 16 pigeons. The pigeons were released along a familiar route and returned to their loft, allowing researchers to retrieve the recorded footage. The study revealed that pigeons adjust their eye movements while flying, contrary to the previous belief that their eyes remained fixed in place.
The findings challenge the common assumption about how pigeons navigate in the air. David Bird, an emeritus professor of wildlife biology at McGill University, commented on the study, highlighting the importance of understanding how birds process visual information during flight. Another recent study, conducted by the California Institute of Technology, suggested that pigeons tend to keep their eyes steady during flight, but the UBC study showed otherwise.
The implications of this research extend to drone technology, as engineers could potentially improve drone design by incorporating movable cameras similar to how pigeons adjust their vision while flying. This innovative approach could enhance drones’ ability to gather information from their environment effectively. Bird emphasized the significance of using advanced cameras in drones to optimize their performance for various applications, such as wildlife observation and surveillance.
