Pakistan and Afghanistan engaged in a series of attacks, marking a significant escalation in their ongoing tensions that Pakistan’s defence minister described as a state of “open war.” The conflict began when Afghanistan conducted a cross-border assault on Pakistan in retaliation for recent deadly Pakistani airstrikes on Afghan border regions. In response, Pakistan launched airstrikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, targeting military sites.
According to Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, the attacks aimed at important military targets in Pakistan to demonstrate Afghanistan’s capability to retaliate against Pakistani aggression. He criticized Pakistan for not seeking peaceful resolutions through dialogue.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif expressed frustration, stating that their patience had worn thin, leading to an open state of war between the two nations. Asif had hoped for peace in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of NATO forces in 2021, expecting the Taliban to prioritize the welfare of the Afghan people and regional stability.
The deteriorating situation was compounded by allegations that the Taliban had transformed Afghanistan into a “colony of India,” Pakistan’s long-standing rival. Tensions between the two countries have been escalating for months, with border clashes in October resulting in numerous casualties. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harboring militant groups that launch attacks across the border, in addition to aligning with India.
Both sides have issued conflicting casualty claims regarding the recent attacks, with Pakistan reporting significant losses on the Afghan side, while Afghanistan disputes these figures. The casualty claims remain unverified independently.
The United Nations, along with other countries like Iran and Russia, called for an immediate halt to the hostilities and urged both Pakistan and Afghanistan to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Efforts to mediate talks between the two nations have so far not yielded a formal agreement, leading to continued sporadic clashes.
The international community, including neighboring countries and global organizations, emphasized the need to protect civilian lives and resolve differences through peaceful means. The situation remains volatile, with appeals for calm and diplomatic solutions amid the escalating conflict.
