Iran and the United States engaged in extensive indirect talks on Thursday regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, but they concluded without reaching an agreement. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who facilitated the discussions in Geneva, mentioned there was notable progress in the negotiations, although details were not provided.
As the talks neared their end, Iranian state television reported that Tehran remained committed to enriching uranium, refused proposals for transferring it abroad, and demanded the removal of international sanctions. This stance indicates Iran’s reluctance to comply with U.S. President Donald Trump’s requirements. Trump aims to secure a deal to limit Iran’s nuclear activities, seizing the opportunity amidst internal turmoil within Iran following widespread protests. Iran, on the other hand, seeks to avoid conflict but asserts its right to uranium enrichment while avoiding discussions on other contentious issues like its missile program and support for groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
Al-Busaidi disclosed that technical-level discussions will occur in Vienna next week, where the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is based. Both American and Iranian representatives did not provide immediate comments on the matter. In case of a U.S. attack, Iran has warned that American military bases in the region could be targeted, endangering thousands of U.S. service members. Additionally, Iran has threatened Israel, potentially sparking a broader regional conflict in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the catastrophic consequences of a war, highlighting the widespread devastation it could cause. Despite the absence of a breakthrough during the recent talks, Iran expert Ali Vaez noted that the U.S. team’s willingness to continue negotiations indicates common ground between the two sides. This meeting marked the third round of discussions since the previous year’s failed attempts, which were disrupted by a conflict initiated by Israel against Iran and subsequent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
