More than 100 individuals, along with their children and pets, sought refuge in the basement of a community hall for the second consecutive night as red tornado warnings flashed on their mobile devices on Saturday evening. Chris Stewart recounted the experience of being in Aquadeo, Sask., when the fire alarm disrupted their dinner plans. Aquadeo, a resort village situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake, became the temporary shelter for these evacuees.
Despite initial concerns from some children, the atmosphere in the basement remained calm as everyone gathered together during the alerts. The crowd swelled to over 100 people on both occasions, finding safety in the community hall’s basement.
Similar scenarios unfolded across various communities in west-central Saskatchewan, including Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, where Environment Canada issued tornado warnings due to a slow-moving weather system colliding with another system from Alberta. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski described the situation as relatively rare but not unprecedented, emphasizing that such occurrences were within the normal range.
Adverse weather conditions persisted in Saskatchewan over the weekend, with heavy rainfall, hail ranging from ping-pong to golf ball size near Neilburg, and wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h near North Battleford during Saturday’s storms. While no tornado touchdowns were officially confirmed by Environment Canada on Saturday, the previous day witnessed tornado activity.
Shannon Risling recounted a harrowing experience at Jackfish Lake on Friday when she and her daughter observed a menacing wall cloud forming. Despite the danger, they witnessed the tornado touching down multiple times, prompting Risling to contact Environment Canada for assistance.
Looking ahead, Ziolkowski predicted a return to calmer conditions in the Prairies as a high-pressure ridge dominated the weather forecast for the upcoming week. By Sunday morning, Chris Stewart was back on the water, enjoying a day of fishing under clear skies and favorable weather conditions.
