“Canada’s First Commercial Rocket Launch Site to Open by 2028”

Featured in:

A Nova Scotia-based company aiming to construct Canada’s inaugural commercial rocket launch facility has finalized an agreement with a German aerospace corporation, potentially enabling orbital launches by 2028. Maritime Launch Services Ltd. from Halifax has disclosed that Isar Aerospace of Germany intends to establish a specialized facility for its Spectrum rocket at the Maritime Launch site near Canso, N.S., on the Eastern Shore.

The Spectrum rocket, a two-stage vehicle designed for transporting small and medium-sized satellites into space, will be accommodated at the Nova Scotia location. Isar Aerospace has established a new Canadian subsidiary, Isar Aerospace Canada Inc., after already setting up its primary launch site in Norway.

Addressing the importance of launch capacity in the defense and intelligence sectors, Alexandre Dalloneau, Isar’s vice president of mission and launch operations, emphasized the necessity for countries to access space data independently. He highlighted Canada as the next destination in their initiative to offer comprehensive launch capability to sovereign nations.

Canada currently lacks autonomous space launch capabilities and has historically relied on the United States for satellite launches. Recognizing the significance of space launches, the Canadian government has identified it as a pivotal sovereign capability in its recent defense industrial strategy. Additionally, the 2025 budget has allocated $183 million over the next three years to establish space launch capabilities.

In a significant development, the federal government inked a 10-year, $200 million lease agreement with Maritime Launch in March to enable Canada to launch satellites into orbit without external assistance. The initiative aligns with the country’s goal of achieving self-reliance in space endeavors across various sectors including banking and telecommunications.

Maritime Launch’s venture, dubbed Spaceport Nova Scotia, is being developed to provide launch infrastructure for commercial, civil, and defense clients. It is slated to become Canada’s premier commercial launch pad upon commencement of operations later this year. Isar Aerospace is set to invest approximately $100 million as a tenant to prepare its launch pad, with construction scheduled to commence this year and space launches anticipated by 2028, aiming for up to 40 launches annually at the site by 2029.

The 10-year agreement entails Isar making quarterly payments of $3.75 million US to Maritime Launch once the contract is fully operational. The deal was signed by Maritime Launch CEO Stephen Matier during a NATO defense industry summit in Turkey. Matier confirmed that out of the four launch pads under development, three have already been allocated to Isar, the federal government, and Montreal-based aerospace company Reaction Dynamics. Discussions are ongoing with potential clients for the remaining pad, while plans for a fifth pad are on hold for future development.

Canada’s decision to join NATO Starlift, a project aimed at establishing a space launch network for allies to swiftly send payloads into space, was announced in March. Matier lauded the collaboration between companies in NATO-aligned nations, citing the Isar agreement as a prime example of such cooperative efforts.

By entering partnerships like NATO Starlift, nations in Europe and North America are enhancing their collaborative space capabilities to facilitate efficient satellite launches. Matier emphasized the cooperation among entities involved in rocket launches, satellite deployment, and space exploration, underscoring the collective endeavor to advance space-related initiatives.
