Japanese figure skater Kazuki Tomono impressed with his strongest short program in over three years during the opening of Skate America. This performance put him ahead of Kevin Aymoz from France and Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov before the free skate. Daniel Grassl from Italy outperformed Jason Brown from the U.S., who placed fifth in his first Grand Prix event of the season.
In the pairs competition, Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava showcased a nearly flawless routine to “Bolero,” extending their lead over Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara. Tomono, aiming for a spot in Japan’s Winter Olympics team, captivated the crowd in Lake Placid, New York, with a remarkable short program set to music by SOFI TUKKER.
Aymoz, a six-time French champion, rebounded with a strong performance after a disappointing showing at Skate Canada. Shaidorov, a world silver medallist, is chasing his first Grand Prix victory after a bronze at the Cup of China earlier this season. Grassl and Brown also delivered solid performances, setting the stage for an exciting competition.
Brown, eyeing a spot on his third Olympic team, faces a challenging schedule with back-to-back Grand Prix events. Despite some technical errors, Brown’s passion and precision shone through in his performance of “Riverdance.” Metelkina and Berulava continued their winning streak from the Cup of China with an impressive routine, emphasizing their synchronized jumps and clean execution.
The competition intensifies as the skaters aim for the podium in the upcoming events, with ice dance and women’s programs yet to come at Skate America. The medals for the men’s and pairs events will be awarded on Saturday, with the ice dance and women’s medals decided on the final day of the competition on Sunday.
