Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty to Parents’ Murder

Featured in:

Nick Reiner, a 32-year-old individual, son of the renowned Hollywood figure Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, entered a plea of not guilty on Monday to two charges of first-degree murder, more than two months after the tragic deaths of his parents. This marks the first time he has denied the allegations of fatally stabbing his parents. Represented by his new attorney, Kimberly Greene, Reiner made the plea from a custody area within a crowded Los Angeles courtroom.

Nick Reiner, the third child of Rob Reiner, has been in custody without bail since his arrest shortly after the discovery of his parents’ deceased bodies on December 14 in their upscale Brentwood home in Los Angeles. During the court appearance, Reiner was seen in the enclosed custody area, sporting a shaved head and light facial hair, dressed in brown jail attire. He briefly communicated with his lawyer through the glass before the proceedings began. At one point, a door in the enclosure was opened, allowing them to speak face to face. Throughout the hearing, he only responded affirmatively when asked by the judge if he waived his right for the case to proceed expediently.

Unlike his previous court appearance in December, Reiner was not wearing the suicide prevention outfit. This marks the third attempt at entering a plea, with various issues, including a change in defense attorneys, leading to the delay until the recent court session. The presiding judge scheduled Reiner to return on April 29 for the preliminary hearing, during which prosecutors will present evidence for a new judge to determine if a trial is warranted.

The case will now be overseen by long-serving Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta, known for handling notable murder, manslaughter, and public corruption cases in recent years. District attorney Nathan Hochman mentioned that the decision on whether to pursue the death penalty against Reiner is still pending, with a thorough evaluation of all circumstances involved.

Reiner’s plea of not guilty at this stage of the legal process is customary, regardless of future strategies. His appearance in court followed previous hearings that witnessed drama but minimal progress in the case. His former attorney, Alan Jackson, had to step down due to unforeseen circumstances during a previous hearing in January, emphasizing Reiner’s innocence as per California laws.

Authorities have maintained silence on potential motives, with limited leaks from both sides, leaving crucial inquiries regarding the incident unanswered. Jackson clarified that the decision to withdraw came after extensive investigation, aiming to counteract misinformation surrounding the case. The funding source for Jackson’s representation or any potential involvement of public defenders remains undisclosed.

Deputy district attorney Habib Balian disclosed that the office awaits a complete autopsy report, having shared all available evidence with the defense. The initial findings from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner indicated that Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner succumbed to “multiple sharp force injuries.” The exact details surrounding the tragic event remain under court order, with no official mention of motives.

Rob Reiner, a distinguished director recognized for iconic films from the 1980s and ’90s, passed away alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who he met during the production of one of his films. Their enduring marriage of 36 years was cut short by the unfortunate event.
