“New York Giants Fire Head Coach Daboll Mid-Season”

Featured in:

The New York Giants have terminated Brian Daboll, the head coach born in Welland, Ont., in the middle of his fourth season as the team’s record dropped to 2-8 following a loss to Chicago. Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator, has been appointed as the interim head coach. This decision was made by the team’s ownership after the Giants lost 24-20 to the Bears, failing to hold onto another late lead. General manager Joe Schoen will oversee the search for a new head coach as owners John Mara and Steve Tisch expressed their disappointment in the team’s recent performance.

Despite the coaching change, the rest of Daboll’s coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, will remain in their positions. The Giants have experienced a four-game losing streak since their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last month. Daboll’s tenure as head coach saw a successful start with a playoff appearance in his first season but has since struggled, leading to his dismissal with a record of 20-40-1.

Daboll’s termination marks the second coaching change this season after Tennessee parted ways with Brian Callahan. The Giants’ decision to remove Daboll is aimed at improving the team’s performance and addressing the disappointments faced over the past few seasons. The team’s owners emphasized their commitment to delivering better results and acknowledged the frustrations of the fans.

Kafka, who previously worked with Andy Reid and had brief playing experience with the Philadelphia Eagles, steps into the interim head coach role amidst challenges within the team, including injuries to key players like Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo. Schoen’s position as general manager remains secure, with the Giants’ ownership expressing confidence in his ability to lead the team through its rebuilding phase and develop the young talent within the roster.

Looking ahead, Daboll is expected to explore coaching opportunities elsewhere in the NFL, given his extensive experience as an offensive assistant. The Giants’ decision to part ways with Daboll reflects their determination to redirect the team’s trajectory and strive for better results in the upcoming seasons.
