The show, produced by Crave and Bell Media and distributed by HBO Max in the United States, gained unexpected popularity upon its release in November 2025. It was recently revealed as one of the 11 winning TV programs in the entertainment category.

The Peabody Awards panel, in a press announcement, praised “Heated Rivalry” for its adept handling of intricate themes such as sexuality and emotional intimacy, applauding its ability to engage viewers positively and promote healthy masculinity. The series, helmed by Montreal filmmaker Jacob Tierney and inspired by a book series by author Rachel Reid from Halifax, delves into the clandestine romantic relationship between fictional professional hockey players Shane Hollander (portrayed by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie).
