Sid Krofft, known for his creation of vibrant and eccentric characters on television during the 1960s and ’70s, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 10 at the residence of his friend and business partner Kelly Killian. He was 96 years old. Together with his younger brother Marty, Krofft was instrumental in producing various TV shows, notably their first hit series, “H.R. Pufnstuf.”

Describing the show as their “first baby,” Krofft and his brother brought audiences into the fantastical world of a young boy, a talking flute, and a six-foot-tall dragon. Publicist Adam Fenton noted that Sid Krofft cherished interacting with his numerous fans until his final days.

Ronnie Burkett, a close friend and fellow puppeteer, reflected on Krofft’s enduring passion and childlike enthusiasm throughout his career. Burkett emphasized the importance of focus and continuous creativity, highlighting Krofft’s ability to consistently generate new ideas well into his late 90s.

When asked about the subversive nature of Sid and Marty Krofft’s puppetry work, Burkett recalled the unique and campy qualities that set their productions apart. He noted the lack of conventional educational content in their shows, focusing instead on creating imaginative and entertaining worlds populated by eccentric characters.

Christian Jacobs, a TV producer and musician, praised the Krofft brothers for their dedication to bringing joy and laughter to audiences. Jacobs emphasized the need for childlike wonder and enthusiasm in children’s entertainment, qualities that Sid Krofft embodied throughout his career.

Sharing a personal anecdote, Jacobs recounted the memorable encounter with Sid Krofft at his L.A. show, where Krofft unexpectedly praised him as the “king of marionettes.” The touching moment underscored the impact of having mentors like Krofft who inspire a sense of youthful excitement and creativity.

Reflecting on the experience, Jacobs expressed gratitude for the mentorship and acknowledgment from Krofft, highlighting the enduring influence of older generations in nurturing a sense of perpetual youthfulness and creativity in their protégés.
