“Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont Joins Liberal Party”

Featured in:

Nova Scotia Member of Parliament Chris d’Entremont made a significant move by resigning from the Conservative caucus on Tuesday and announcing his decision to join the Liberal Party. In a statement released by the Liberal Party, d’Entremont expressed that his departure from the Conservatives followed careful deliberation and discussions with constituents. He emphasized that after thoughtful consideration, he concluded that there is a more promising direction for the country and the Acadie-Annapolis region.

D’Entremont narrowly secured victory in the rural Nova Scotia riding during the recent federal election, triumphing over his Liberal opponent by a slim margin. He cited Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new budget as aligning with the priorities echoed by his constituents, focusing on enhancing community infrastructure and fostering economic growth, which influenced his decision to join the government caucus.

Having a background as a longstanding Conservative figure and previously serving in provincial politics before his election to the House of Commons in 2019, d’Entremont highlighted the importance of leading with optimism and a focus on a prosperous future, indirectly referencing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. With this impending party switch, the Liberals are set to have 170 seats, edging closer to a majority in the House of Commons.

Liberal whip Mark Gerretsen characterized the Liberal Party as inclusive, emphasizing that there is always room for individuals seeking to join their diverse coalition. He attributed d’Entremont’s departure from the Conservatives to the perceived rightward shift under Poilievre, noting that d’Entremont’s progressive stance aligns more with the values of the Progressive Conservative ideology.

Reacting to d’Entremont’s move, Rob Batherson, a former president of the federal Conservatives from Nova Scotia, expressed deep disappointment, labeling it as a significant betrayal in his extensive political experience. Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman criticized d’Entremont for allegedly failing to uphold his commitment to his constituents’ interests, accusing him of prioritizing personal motives over addressing key issues like inflation and grocery prices. Conservative MP Aaron Gunn went further, bluntly labeling d’Entremont as a “coward” for his decision. In contrast, Conservative MP Dominique Vien conveyed surprise and disappointment at d’Entremont’s departure from the Conservative caucus.
