Toronto Animal Services has partnered with NutriCanine, a local fresh dog food company, to promote the adoption of large dogs in the Greater Toronto Area. This collaborative effort aims to shift perceptions about big dogs, which are often overlooked in adoption processes. The campaign, scheduled from March 23 to April 23, will see all adoption fees waived for large dogs and large-breed puppies in Toronto.
Defined as dogs over 50 pounds or puppies expected to reach that weight, “large” canines are highlighted for their loyalty, affection, and overlooked potential as loving companions. Elana Trainoff, partnerships manager at Toronto Animal Services, emphasized that the size of these dogs can sometimes deter potential adopters due to concerns about space and exercise needs. However, Trainoff emphasized that these big dogs have immense love to offer and can positively impact the lives of their adopters.
Trainoff noted that large dogs tend to wait longer for adoption solely due to their size, with many of them being ideal companions adaptable to various living situations. The previous year’s campaign led to 58 successful adoptions, showcasing the impact of such initiatives in finding forever homes for these deserving animals.
To adopt a big dog, interested individuals can browse available dogs on the city’s website and then contact the respective shelter to schedule a visit. By meeting the dogs in person and understanding their unique personalities, potential adopters can find the perfect match for their families and lifestyles.
