Stellantis, the global automotive giant, is considering divesting its share in a major electric vehicle battery plant in Canada. However, the company remains committed to advancing electrification despite taking a significant financial hit due to scaling back its ambitious electric vehicle initiatives.
In a recent statement, CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts to align with customer preferences. Stellantis revealed its intention to sell its 49% stake in NextStar Energy, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, responsible for constructing a $5 billion battery facility in Windsor, Ontario. Despite this move, Stellantis reassured that it will retain the expertise of hundreds of engineers in Windsor, focusing on electric vehicle and battery technology research.
This decision is vital for Canada’s automotive sector, particularly amid uncertainties stemming from tariffs and evolving electric vehicle markets. Stellantis previously announced a substantial investment in its Ontario operations for electric vehicle production, with additional government funding. The investment aimed to enhance facilities in Windsor and Brampton, including the establishment of a cutting-edge Battery Pack Testing Facility at the Automotive Research and Development Centre (ARDC) in Windsor.
Stellantis has expanded its workforce at the ARDC, hiring 650 employees, bringing the total to 800, with a strong focus on electrification and battery testing. The company affirms that ongoing projects at the ARDC, including the battery lab, will proceed as planned, highlighting its commitment to innovation in electric and hybrid vehicles. Despite the overall strategic shift, Stellantis continues to offer a variety of powertrains, including electric options like the Dodge Charger, manufactured in Windsor.
Additionally, Stellantis is actively recruiting for sales and marketing positions across Canada, signaling a growth phase for the company. Amid these developments, Stellantis remains dedicated to advancing sustainable mobility and maintaining its presence in Canada’s automotive landscape.
