A man from South Korea is currently cycling his way across North America, starting in British Columbia and aiming to reach Montreal, with the support of generous Canadians. Seongmin Ji, 28, is easily spotted in his all-black attire and navy blue toque as he maneuvers through the Sea to Sky Highway from Whistler to Vancouver. His bicycle is adorned with license plates from various places like Alaska, Utah, Guatemala, and B.C., collected with the help of local residents along his journey.
Having already completed cycling routes along the west coast of South America, Central America, and now North America, Ji embarked on his current 5,000-kilometer trek to Montreal. His primary motivations are personal growth, self-discovery, testing his limits, and inspiring others. Starting from Ushuaia, Argentina, he cycled to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, before making his way to Kitwanga, B.C., and further south to Squamish, with plans to head towards Washington next.
Upon arriving in Canada, Ji has relied on the kindness of strangers who have welcomed him into their homes. Utilizing the Warm Showers platform, which connects touring cyclists with locals, Ji has received accommodation, showers, and even laundry services from supportive individuals. During his stay in Smithers, B.C., Rory Luxmoore and his family hosted Ji, who left a lasting impression with his maturity and passion for his journey.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Ji remains humble and grateful for the assistance he has received along the way. He attributes his strength during challenging moments to the kindness shown by others and draws inspiration from Canadian icon Terry Fox. Ji’s ultimate goal is to give back to his community by running the length of South Korea for cancer charity upon his return.
