“Ontario to Remove Speed Cameras Amid Controversy”

Featured in:

Speed cameras in Ontario are scheduled for removal within a fortnight following the recent passing of a bill by Premier Doug Ford’s government to outlaw them, without a clear timeline for the implementation of alternative traffic calming measures. Despite municipal evidence suggesting the effectiveness of speed cameras in reducing speeding, Ford maintains that speed cameras are ineffective and favors alternatives such as speed bumps, roundabouts, and flashing signs. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria indicated that temporary and larger signage will be installed in speed camera-affected zones before the removal, with ongoing collaboration with municipalities for additional traffic calming initiatives. The government plans to encourage the use of speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and roundabouts, with a new fund to assist with costs, although the exact amount has not been disclosed.

Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward expressed concerns about the lack of clarity on funding and alternative measures before the speed cameras are removed, highlighting potential safety gaps. Opposition leaders, including NDP Leader Marit Stiles and Liberal parliamentary leader John Fraser, criticized the hasty removal of speed cameras, emphasizing the potential risks and contrasting it with evidence supporting their effectiveness. The decision to eliminate speed cameras was part of a broader red tape reduction bill that expedited the process, bypassing public hearings and limiting debate, following the vandalism of 17 speed cameras in Toronto, prompting Ford’s intensified campaign against them.
