Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the record as the most-watched movie on the streaming platform. The upcoming installment will continue the collaboration between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans under an exclusive multi-year deal for animation.
Expressing pride as a Korean filmmaker, Kang, who hails from Toronto, emphasized the audience’s demand for more from the Korean narrative and characters. The sequel will delve deeper into the world created in the original musical film, which follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix as they juggle their fame with their hidden roles as demon hunters. The movie’s standout track, “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The film garnered critical acclaim and multiple awards, including recognition at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. It also received two Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best original song. Additionally, “Golden” secured a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first Grammy win for a K-pop song.
Netflix revealed that “KPop Demon Hunters” achieved a groundbreaking 482 million views and 32 million views for its lyric videos within six months. The movie’s soundtrack continues to resonate globally. Looking ahead to the sequel, Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative vision to guide the project towards success and audience connection.
