Comedian Mae Martin has been selected as the host for the upcoming 55th annual Juno Awards, as confirmed by organizers on Thursday. Martin, known for their recent hosting stint at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2024 and the successful Netflix show “Wayward,” will be the first solo comedian to lead the ceremony since Russell Peters in 2009.
Reflecting on their journey from appearing on a radio show in Toronto at age 13 to now hosting the Junos at 38, Martin expressed excitement about the opportunity. The multi-talented Toronto native, who received their first Juno nomination for comedy album of the year just two years ago, will grace the stage in Hamilton on March 29.
Following a series of previous hosts, including Michael Bublé and Nelly Furtado, Martin aims to bring a relaxed and lively atmosphere to the event. They hope to infuse the show with the spirited energy of a live music performance, encouraging the audience to engage and enjoy the experience.
The star-studded lineup for the event includes performances by R&B/soul artist Daniel Caesar, who will also receive the international achievement award, and folk/roots singer-songwriter William Prince. Among the previously announced performers are Arkells from Hamilton, the Beaches from Toronto, and the legendary Joni Mitchell, who will be honored with a lifetime achievement award.
Martin’s hosting role coincides with a pivotal moment in the Canadian awards scene, marked by a renewed focus on the country’s unique artistic contributions amid external pressures. The recent Juno Awards have served as a platform to showcase Canadian pride and talent, with artists and hosts alike expressing a strong sense of national identity and unity.
Notably, this year’s awards will introduce category changes, such as the addition of the Latin music recording of the year award and updated eligibility criteria for rap categories to highlight homegrown talent. The 55th Juno Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 29 at the newly renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton, with live broadcast coverage on various CBC platforms.
