“Iran Sentences Protester to Death”

Featured in:

An Iranian man named Erfan Soltani, aged 26, has received a death sentence in Iran, as per reports from human rights organizations. This development coincides with widespread protests in Iran and a forceful government crackdown.

Soltani’s situation is gaining attention as potentially marking the first death penalty in the recent surge of protests against the Iranian regime led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. There are accounts of police firing on groups of demonstrators. The death toll has now surpassed 2,000, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. An Iranian state official also confirmed to Reuters that around 2,000 individuals have been killed.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with one individual telling the BBC that people were collapsing in place. Iran Human Rights, a non-profit organization based in Norway, reported that Soltani’s family was notified on Monday of his arrest in Fardis, a city west of Tehran, on January 8, and subsequent death sentence. According to a source close to the family, the execution was scheduled for Wednesday without a trial, and the specific charges against Soltani remain unclear.

Expressing deep concern over the ongoing violence and potential mass executions, Iran Human Rights issued a statement urging immediate action from the international community.

The non-profit organization noted that Iranian officials have labeled protesters as “mohareb” (meaning “war against God”), terrorists, and troublemakers, connecting them to Israel and the United States, offenses that carry the death penalty. The protests initially sparked over economic grievances but quickly expanded to challenge the theocratic government, particularly targeting the 86-year-old Khamenei.

Hengaw, another rights group based in Norway, revealed that Soltani’s sister, a lawyer, has been denied access to her brother’s case file. Soltani has been deprived of basic rights since his arrest, including legal counsel and due process guarantees. His family has been kept uninformed about the legal proceedings, with only one final visit granted before his intended execution.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he had canceled meetings with Iranian officials until the violence against protesters ceases. In response, a top Iranian security official named Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the main perpetrators of violence against the Iranian people.

Professor Mohamad Tavakoli-Targhi from the University of Toronto criticized Trump and Netanyahu’s remarks, stating that their statements have hindered rather than assisted the demonstrators in Iran. He emphasized the importance of Iranian sovereignty amid the ongoing political turmoil and foreign influences.

Tavakoli-Targhi highlighted the resemblance between the current protests and those preceding the 1979 revolution in Iran but noted the absence of significant fractures within the Iranian government or military. He suggested that revolutions follow a distinct pattern, with protests ebbing and flowing, but the current situation lacks the internal divisions necessary for a full-scale revolution.
