“Iran Protests: Death Toll Surpasses 2,500”

Featured in:

The death toll from the recent nationwide demonstrations in Iran has surpassed 2,500 individuals, according to activists who reported the figure on Wednesday. Following a government-imposed communication blackout during the crackdown, Iranians were able to make international calls again after several days of silence. The level of violence witnessed during these protests is unprecedented in Iran in recent history.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), based in the United States and known for its reliable reporting on previous unrest, confirmed that 2,571 people have died, with 2,403 being protesters, 147 government-affiliated individuals, 12 children, and nine civilians not involved in the protests. Over 18,100 individuals have been detained during the two weeks of unrest, as stated by the activist group.

U.S. President Donald Trump encouraged Iranian protesters to persist, stating on his Truth Social platform that he had canceled meetings with Iranian officials until the violence against protesters ceased. However, Trump later mentioned that his administration awaited accurate casualty reports before taking further action.

Although the Iranian government has not released official casualty figures, Iranian state television acknowledged the high death toll following the HRANA report. With internet access restricted in Iran, monitoring the situation from abroad has become challenging, and independent verification of the death toll remains unavailable.

Reports from Iran indicated a heavy security presence in central Tehran, with anti-riot police officers and Revolutionary Guard members patrolling major intersections. Witnesses observed burned banks and government offices, damaged ATMs, and disruptions in banking transactions due to the lack of internet connectivity.

Despite the ongoing unrest and fears of a potential U.S. military strike, dialogue between Iran and the U.S. remains uncertain. Iranians expressed concerns about the repercussions of the protests and the possibility of external intervention while navigating the challenges posed by security forces and restrictions on communication.

Additionally, security forces in Tehran were reportedly conducting searches for Starlink terminals in apartment buildings, while state television announced free mortuary services amid reports of high fees for the release of bodies. The situation in Iran continues to evolve as international stakeholders, including the U.S., China, and European countries, respond to the escalating crisis.
