Surrey authorities disclosed that Kap’s Cafe, a local eatery owned by renowned Indian comedian Kapil Sharma, was once again struck by bullets, marking the third violent incident this year in what seems to be a pattern of extortion-related attacks. The Surrey Police Service (SPS) swiftly responded to the Newton area following reports of gunfire damaging the cafe located on 120 Street around 4 a.m. PT. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as staff members were present during the incident.
While the SPS has not officially confirmed the connection to extortion, spokesperson Ian MacDonald hinted at the possibility, indicating ongoing investigations by the department and the Provincial Extortion Task Force into previous shootings at Kap’s Cafe. The cafe had previously been targeted in July and August, with a recent video circulating online showing multiple shots fired at the establishment from a passing vehicle.
The persistent attacks have left the community on edge, with local residents expressing concern over the escalating violence. Mike Grieve, a regular passerby, lamented the repeated assaults on the cafe, emphasizing the impact on Sharma’s business and the need for increased security measures in the area. Despite the challenges, neighboring businesses like Brown Blendz Barbershop have vowed to carry on with their operations, highlighting the resilience of the community.
Authorities have noted a concerning rise in extortion-related incidents in Surrey, with numerous shootings and threatening demands affecting South Asian communities. The recent injury of a woman in connection with an extortion case underscores the severity of the situation. Police have urged anyone with information regarding the Kap’s Cafe shooting to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
In response to the escalating violence, local officials and residents are calling for stronger measures to combat gang-related activities and ensure the safety of the community. With the number of reported extortion cases and shootings on the rise, there is a growing urgency to address the root causes of such criminal acts and safeguard the well-being of residents and businesses in Surrey.
