Hulu has officially called off the planned reboot of the iconic ’90s supernatural series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as confirmed by the show’s former lead actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, in a recent Instagram announcement.
Gellar shared the disappointing news, revealing that Hulu had opted to halt the project. She had previously worked on a pilot for the proposed series titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, co-starring alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was set to portray the new vampire slayer.
The original show, which depicted a band of youths combating vampires and other mystical beings in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, was groundbreaking in its storytelling approach, setting a new standard for television at the time.
Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Gellar expressed gratitude to Chloe Zhao, the acclaimed director assigned to revive the series. She expressed her unexpected joy at revisiting Buffy’s character and underscored the profound impact the role had on her and the audience.
Gellar assured fans that despite the cancellation, her admiration for Buffy remains unwavering, and she humorously promised to be reachable even in the event of an actual apocalypse.
Hulu has yet to provide a statement regarding the decision when contacted by CBC News for comments.
