“Canadian Women’s Hockey Rivalry Series Preps Olympic Team”

Featured in:

A total of 25 players are set to participate in the upcoming Rivalry Series for the Canadian women’s hockey team. This series holds significant importance as Hockey Canada progresses towards finalizing the roster for the Olympics in Milan, Italy, less than 100 days away.

The Canada-U.S. Rivalry Series is vital for players vying for spots on the Olympic team, providing an opportunity to test line combinations and team chemistry. With only four games scheduled before the Olympics kick off in February, these matches are crucial for team preparation.

The Rivalry Series will kick off in Cleveland, Ohio, this Thursday, followed by a game in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday. The series will culminate with two games in Edmonton on December 10 and 13, with expected changes in the roster for the final matches.

Canadian GM Gina Kingsbury emphasized the significance of these games in shaping the team’s identity and success for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games. The focus remains on fine-tuning details during training blocks to ensure a cohesive performance on the ice.

Unlike past practices of centralized training, Hockey Canada has adopted a new selection process for the Olympic team. Thirty Olympic hopefuls have participated in training blocks across the country this fall, replacing the traditional centralized training approach.

The 25-player roster for the U.S. leg of the Rivalry Series includes notable NCAA players eyeing their Olympic debut, such as Chloe Primerano, Caitlin Kraemer, and Ève Gascon. The experienced veterans like Marie-Philip Poulin, Blayre Turnbull, and Natalie Spooner will lead the team in the initial series games.

Several key players, including Emily Clark and Brianne Jenner, will be absent from the training camp roster due to various reasons. Tough decisions lie ahead for Canadian head coach Troy Ryan regarding the final roster selection, especially in the defensive lineup.

In the goaltending department, Emerance Maschmeyer will lead the team in the absence of Ann-Renée Desbiens, providing opportunities for Gascon and Kayle Osborne to showcase their skills. The final Olympic roster is set to comprise 23 players.

Head coach Ryan emphasized the importance of chemistry building during training blocks, as the team has limited game time before the Olympics. The camp and upcoming league matches will be crucial in finalizing the team dynamics and player selections.

PWHL training camps are scheduled to commence soon, with players from both the Canadian and U.S. national teams expected to join their respective teams. The league’s regular season will play a pivotal role in the final roster decisions as the teams gear up for the Olympics in January.

The Canadian roster for the initial Rivalry Series games features a mix of experienced players and promising talent across forward, defense, and goaltending positions, showcasing the depth and skill within the team.
