In the West Bank, Israeli settlements constructed since the 1960s are considered illegal under international law. The Canadian government has condemned these settlements, which have been linked to instances of violence by Israeli settlers against displaced Palestinians. A recent investigation by CBC’s the fifth estate revealed that Canadian charities have been indirectly supporting organizations, including the Israeli military, involved in expanding these settlements. Despite violating regulations governing registered Canadian charities, these donations have been issued with tax receipts. Co-host Ioanna Roumeliotis explains the findings of their investigation and why critics argue that such funding perpetuates violence, undermining prospects for peace and a Palestinian state.
